A stunning solar PV canopy has completely transformed the way one Buckinghamshire family lives, while dramatically reducing their energy bills and improving outdoor living space all year round.
Located near Waddesdon, the large family home had several energy-hungry features, including two decorative water features and a large, illuminated fountain. As electricity prices continued to rise, the homeowners began searching for long-term renewable energy solutions that would not compromise the appearance of their property.
Over the years, the family had already invested heavily in energy-saving upgrades. These included installing biomass heating, switching to LED lighting, and improving insulation throughout the home. However, despite these improvements, electricity and LPG gas costs continued to climb.
Traditional roof-mounted solar panels were considered but ultimately rejected. The homeowners disliked the appearance of rooftop panels and were concerned after hearing reports of roof leaks from friends who had installed them. In addition, the roof layout was unsuitable for a clean and efficient solar panel arrangement.
To reduce energy consumption further, the family began switching off exterior lighting and water features while lowering hot water temperatures. Although these measures helped reduce electricity use, they also changed the atmosphere of the home.
Returning home to a dark garden and silent fountain removed much of the welcoming ambience the property once had.
Several years earlier, the homeowners had installed a small glass veranda canopy at the rear of the property. Then, unexpectedly, they received an email from 123v Solar Canopies announcing a newly developed product that integrated solar PV panels directly into verandas, canopies, and carports.
The idea immediately solved two major problems:
Creating a larger covered outdoor entertainment area for family and guests
Generating renewable electricity to reduce energy bills
The original cantilever glass veranda had worked well for smaller gatherings, but during larger family events there was insufficient shelter when the weather changed. Temporary fabric covers had previously been installed during summer months but were quickly damaged by wind.
The homeowners also wanted permanent shade during hotter months, while avoiding the inconvenience of erecting and removing temporary covers every day.
Following a site visit with 123v — coincidentally involving the same specialist who installed the original veranda 11 years earlier — several designs were explored before finalising a bespoke 7.2m x 7.2m solar canopy with a central tinted glass strip.
The completed structure features:
24 x 455W bifacial solar PV panels
Total system size of 10.92kW
Integrated modern canopy design
Year-round outdoor living space
After just 12 months, the solar canopy generated an impressive 10,326.3kWh of electricity. Initial estimates predicted annual production of 9,205.3kWh, meaning the system exceeded expectations by 12.2%.
The homeowners believe the exceptional performance is largely due to the bifacial solar panels, which can generate electricity from both sides of the panel. Additional tree line height reductions around the property are expected to improve solar performance even further in 2026.
The results have been transformative. The home’s water features and exterior lighting are now fully operational again, while electricity bills have been reduced to almost zero.
The family has since replaced their LPG cooker with an electric model and are now considering purchasing an electric vehicle and even installing a hot tub beneath the canopy.
Most importantly, the covered outdoor space is now used throughout the entire year, fundamentally changing how the family enjoys their home.
For these Buckinghamshire homeowners, investing in a solar canopy has delivered far more than renewable energy — it has completely enhanced their lifestyle.
