Solar Carports for the 21st Century

The client required a carport to cover an existing car parking area that allows cars to be parked without the obstacles that are created by the posts of a normal carport. 123v solved this problem by installing a 12M structural grade aluminium fascia designed by 123v to overcome this type of problem. The posts were set back, so as to create a cantilever carport canopy section at the front. This meant that the cars can freely manoeuvre in and out of the car parking area.

The original design was to have 123v GRP roof sheeting, however during the technical survey it was identified that the project was potentially ideal for a PV Solar panelled canopy carport.  So that adequate light was available clear glass was mixed in with the solar panels. 123v have developed a roof glazing system that can do this, the glazing bars are registered with the UK Patent office.

An estimate of the performance of the grid-connected PV solar carport was produced, the PV installed was 6.72 KWp with a yearly PV energy production of 5669 KWh. With this information provided the client decided to have the carport solar powered with a pure drive battery 5.12KWh fitted.

Due to the carport’s roof being constructed from solar panels the project is classified as a solar support structure for tax purposes.

The outcome can be seen in the picture above which will combine the benefits of a covered area with clean energy being fed into the home for many years to come.
